The History of Craps

Author: Albert Folger Category: Uncategorized

Games that use the dice have existed since the dawn of civilization. The most ancient dices were probably made of animal bones or were carved out of hard wood such as ebony or oak. We know that Roman soldiers threw pig bones in their shields, more than two thousand years ago, in a called game “bones.” But where did Craps come from, and how did it get its name?

The answers to both these questions is certainly opened to the debate, but here is some information about the development of the dice, from pig bone to what we now have in Casinos:

The Arabs adopted the pastime of the Roman Legionaries which was called “to throw the bone” (to throw the dice). This took place when the Arabs invaded Roman provinces. They referred to the small dice with the word “azzahr”. At a certain point during the commerce with Europeans in the Middle Age, this game was adopted by the French and they referred to it with the word “hasard” which means chance or hazard. During the never ending wars between English and French in the 13th and 14th centuries, English cavalryman imported the game and call it “hazard”.

Today Craps is one of the most popular Casino games. Craps tables are easy to recognize - there are the ones where most people regroup to watch the exciting action of the game, fascinated.

Dices are used and thrown to provide random numbers (uniformly distributed) in chance games and other types of games. However since the numbers on the dice are generally engraved into the face of the dice, influencing slightly the weight of the different sides, there is a tiny deviation and the numbers they produce are not 100 percent random. Dices used in Casinos are so thinly engraved that they are very close to being exactly like a Random Number Generator.

Dices are thrown one at a time or together, by hand or from a cup or box intended for this purpose. They are made to roll on a flat surface. Once they stop, the side of the dice that is directed upward furnishes the result. A typical American Craps game is where 2 dices are thrown together, and you bet on the result of the total value of both dices. They are also frequently used for producing the numbers in social games such as Backgammon.
